The use of electronic cigarettes to quit smoking is heating up in New Zealand with more smokers than ever using the devices to quit smoking, according to new research out of the University of Otago Medical School.
Not All Smokers Know About Vaping’s Benefits
The study, which was led by the University of Otago, Wellington Professor Richard Edwards, found that while smokers are increasingly using e-cigs to quit smoking, there are still a lot of Kiwis who incorrectly believe e-cigs to be as harmful or more harmful than tobacco cigarettes, which is contrary to what international research has shown.
Vaping Is Much Less Harmful Than Smoking
According to Public Health England, which has been mandated by the UK Government to conduct an e-cigarette evidence review, vaping is likely to be at least 95 per cent less harmful than smoking.
To rectify the situation and get New Zealand’s smokers to realise the benefits of switching to vaping, Edwards pointed to efforts aimed at educating the public. In recent times, the NZ Ministry of Health has launched a website by the name of Vaping Facts and the site highlights some important facts about vaping as it relates to smoking. For instance, the site clearly states that vaping is less harmful than smoking and that it can help smokers quit smoking.
