Not all smokers plan on quitting, however, new research suggests that some heavy smokers without plans to quit are unintentionally quitting after trying e-cigarettes.
According to a new study led by Dr Karin Kasza with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Centre in New York, heavy smokers saw their odds of quitting smoking substantially increase after they started using electronic cigarettes every day.
Smokers who vaped every day quit smoking at a rate much higher (28%) than those who did not vape (5.8%), which is something that former smokers who have personally used vaping to quit smoking might not find all that surprising. What is somewhat surprising, though, is the intent behind the quits seen in this study.
The study focused on 1,600 smokers who did not plan on quitting smoking. None of them vaped at the start of the study.
Smokers in the study that began using vaping products daily were over four times more likely to have successfully quit smoking than the ones that did not vape daily.
